Creating Timeless Citadel Senior Portraits
There's something magical about capturing senior portraits at The Citadel. The historic campus, with its striking architecture and deep-rooted traditions, provides the perfect backdrop for commemorating your military college journey. As someone who's photographed countless cadets, I've seen firsthand how these sessions become more than just photos – they're a celebration of your dedication, discipline, and achievements.
When to Schedule Your Session
Timing is everything in photography, and The Citadel campus truly shines during golden hour – that magical time just before sunset. The way the sun sets behind the barracks creates this gorgeous, warm glow that makes every photo look incredible. Plus, this softer lighting is very flattering for your portraits.
Spring sessions are especially popular among seniors, and for good reason! The campus transforms into a photographer's dream as Summerall Field awakens from its winter dormancy. The pristine parade ground comes alive with fresh, green grass – creating a stunning natural backdrop that complements the crisp white dress pants against the vibrant spring grass, while the distinctive dark blue dress coat with its shiny brass buttons adds that perfect touch of military tradition and pride. This revival of color and life adds an extra layer of vibrancy to your portraits, especially during golden hour when the sun catches those polished buttons and casts its warm glow across the field.
Picture-Perfect Locations Around Campus
One of the things I love most about photographing at The Citadel is how many amazing spots we can incorporate into a single session. Here are some of my favorite locations that really capture the essence of your Citadel experience:
Summerall Field – This iconic parade ground isn't just beautiful – it's where so many important Citadel traditions take place. It makes for absolutely stunning portraits that really capture the military precision and pride of being a cadet.
The Ring Statue – Earning your Citadel ring is huge. This spot makes for powerful photos that symbolize everything you've worked so hard to achieve.
Chapel Summerall – The chapel's classic architecture creates these gorgeous, timeless portraits. The light here is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon.
The Historic Front Gates – There's something really powerful about capturing portraits here. It's like standing between your cadet life and your exciting future ahead.
The Barracks (with permission) – When we can access the barracks, it adds such a personal touch to your gallery. These are the spaces where you've lived, studied, and grown throughout your Citadel journey.
The Pavilion and Boating Center – Want something a little different? This location offers beautiful water views and a more relaxed vibe while still keeping that distinctive Citadel connection.
The War Memorial – This powerful memorial honors The Citadel's fallen heroes and provides a moving backdrop for portraits that connect past and present. The solemnity of this location adds depth and meaning to your senior portraits, especially for those planning to commission into military service.
Celebrating All Cadets
As one of the few photographers who regularly captures portraits at The Citadel, I'm particularly honored to photograph female cadets, who make up a small but mighty percentage of the Corps of Cadets. Having worked with female cadets for their senior portraits, I understand the importance of documenting their unique achievement and representation at this historic institution. These portraits not only celebrate individual accomplishments but also inspire future generations of women considering The Citadel for their military education.
Making Your Session Special & Stress-Free
Here's something I really want you to know: I'm all about collaboration! Your senior portrait session should reflect your unique personality and journey. Whether you have a specific vision, want to recreate a meaningful photo, incorporate a special tradition, or showcase a second uniform, I’m here to bring your ideas to life!
Including Family
Some of my most treasured shots come from including family members in senior sessions. Watching proud parents beam next to their cadet, or capturing sibling bonds – especially when both are Citadel cadets – these are the photos that become instant family heirlooms. I recently had the joy of photographing two sisters who are both cadets, creating portraits that celebrated not just their individual achievements, but their unique shared journey at The Citadel. When their mom, who was out of state during the session, received their gallery, she wrote to tell me how she beamed with joy seeing her daughters together in their dress uniforms. Those messages from family members, seeing their reaction to these milestone portraits – that's what makes my job incredibly special.
Don't hesitate to bring your parents, siblings, or other special family members to your session. I always make time for these precious family shots, and trust me – years from now, these will be some of your most cherished images.
Creating Meaningful Connections
One of my favorite sessions was with a cadet who wanted to honor his great-grandfather's military service. While his great-grandfather wasn't a Citadel graduate, we created this amazing side-by-side tribute that celebrated their shared commitment to service. It's these personal touches that make senior portraits truly meaningful.
What to Expect During Your Session
Before your session, I take the time to get to know you just enough to bring out your personality and highlight your accomplishments. Through a brief questionnaire and a pre-session chat, we’ll go over everything to ensure we have all of the important details covered.
I keep things fun, relaxed, and efficient—because you deserve a stress-free experience! We'll capture a great mix of formal and casual shots, and there's always time to change into a second uniform if you'd like more variety in your gallery.
